The week in one line

Light rain on Monday evening and patchy showers from Friday afternoon into Saturday night, with dry, mild days at 10–22 °C in between. No SAWS warnings for Cape Town.

A quiet week for weather, so the story is on the roads: new roadworks start this week in Milnerton, Century City and Paarden Eiland, and the first November fuel data points to another big petrol increase. Check your lights for the wet evenings and look over your tyres after a week of loose chips.

Light rain on Monday evening, the first wet roads in a week

  • Ease off at the first drops: a week of dry weather leaves oil on the road
  • Headlights on for the drive home, even before it gets dark
  • Leave a bigger gap in the night-roadworks lanes on Marine Drive and Century Boulevard

These are quick checks at home or on the forecourt, not an inspection; a workshop check and your service schedule still apply.

10-year licence cards: Parliament briefed

On 6 October the Department of Transport took Parliament’s Select Committee through the draft: car and motorbike cards valid ten years, truck and bus codes staying at five, and three months’ grace on an expired card once you’ve applied to renew. It still has to finish consultation, so renew as normal before your card runs out.

Driving licences may stop counting as ID

The department plans to change the road traffic regulations so that driving licences, learner’s licences and traffic register certificates are no longer accepted as identification, with 30 days for comment once the draft is gazetted. Nothing changes yet; where you have to prove who you are, carry your ID or passport too.

Fuel & costs

Last Wednesday’s record increase is now at the pump: petrol 95 up R3.33 a litre, 93 up R3.12 and diesel 50ppm up R3.24 wholesale. The first week of data for November points to another large rise, about R3.35 on 95, R3.17 on 93 and R1.97 on diesel. It’s one week into the four-week window, so the numbers will move; right tyre pressures are the cheapest way to stretch a tank.

From Wed 4 Nov (expected)Per litre
Petrol 95+R3.35+335c
Petrol 93+R3.17+317c
Diesel 50ppm+R1.97+197c

Expected: Central Energy Fund daily data, average 2–8 October. October changes are the official adjustment of 7 October; diesel is the wholesale change.

Wet roads and new tar: a free full vehicle inspection

Two wet evenings and resurfacing all around both branches are a good reason to have tyres (spare included), brakes, shocks and aircon looked at. The inspection is free. Book it for Saturday morning: Montague Gardens 08:00–13:00, Paarden Eiland 08:00–12:00.

Can a puncture be repaired?

Usually — if it’s a small hole in the main tread and the tyre wasn’t driven flat. Holes in the sidewall or shoulder mean a new tyre.
