Law & licensing

In forceEffective: 1 July 2026

Licence disc renewals cost more in the Western Cape

Provincial fees went up on 1 July: a car between 751 and 1 000 kg is now R420 a year, up from R408, and 1 251 to 1 500 kg is R690. Renewal reminders arrive by SMS or email, not post, so keep your details current.

Driving up-country? AARTO applies there

In Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and most other provinces a fine now comes with a 32-day clock: pay at half price, dispute, or name the driver. Ignore it and an enforcement order blocks your licence disc renewal. Western Cape roads are still outside the system.
