The week in one line

A cold start near 6 °C, heat to 33 °C by Wednesday, a north-westerly front on Thursday with showers early on Friday, then a fresh south-easter and a warm Sunday.

Fuel goes up by more than R3 a litre on Wednesday 7 October, so fill up on Tuesday. Schools reopen that Tuesday too; the Blouberg Marathon closes Otto du Plessis Drive early on Saturday and Sunday.

These are quick checks at home or on the forecourt, not an inspection; a workshop check and your service schedule still apply.

Law & licensing

ProposedEffective: Not yet announced

October came without AARTO phase 3

No proclamation has extended AARTO beyond the 62 municipalities it reached in July, and the Western Cape stays outside the system. Demerit points are not being recorded anywhere, including Johannesburg, until the Minister sets a date.

10-year licence cards: comments closed, final rules awaited

Public comment on the draft regulations closed in September and the final version has not been gazetted. Until it is, your card is valid for five years and must be renewed before it expires.

Fuel & costs

Record increases from Wednesday: petrol 95 up R3.33 to R29.38 a litre at the coast, 93 up R3.12 and diesel 50ppm up about R3.24, driven by Brent crude climbing from $88 to $101. Fill up on Tuesday, then check your pressures; under-inflated tyres waste fuel every day.

From Wed 7 OctPer litre
Petrol 95+R3.33+333c
Petrol 93+R3.12+312c
Diesel 50ppm+R3.24+324c

Central Energy Fund month-end figures of 2 October, confirmed in the official announcement on Monday 5 October. Diesel is the wholesale change; pump prices vary.

Balancing vs alignment: what’s the difference?

Balancing stops a wheel wobbling as it spins. Alignment sets the angle the wheels point at. Different machines, different problems — and most cars need both.
