The week in one line

Welcome to the first Road Brief. Fog lights, tyre pressures and load straps are this week’s checks; the whole list takes five minutes.

Law & licensing

In forceEffective: 1 July 2026

AARTO fines are live, but not in Cape Town

Since 1 July, traffic fines in 62 municipalities, including Johannesburg, Durban and Gqeberha, run under AARTO: 32 days to pay at a 50% discount, dispute or name the driver, with notices by email or SMS. The Western Cape is excluded for now, so a fine at home still goes the usual court route.

Cabinet backs 10-year driving licence cards

Cabinet approved extending the card for cars and motorbikes from five to ten years on 29 July. Nothing changes until regulations are published: renew when your current card expires, and don’t drive on an expired one.

Fuel & costs

After August’s 52c petrol cut, mid-month data points to a modest petrol rise and a steep diesel increase in September. Diesel prices worldwide have climbed on Russia’s export limits, and the rand is around R16.20 to the dollar.
