01

The week in one line

Drizzle on Monday evening, fog patches on Tuesday morning, then a dry, quiet week with cool mornings near 7 °C.

Nothing on the radar after Tuesday, so use the week for the checks you keep putting off. Power Series racing fills Potsdam Road on Saturday.

Heads-up · Mon 17:00–23:00 · drizzle on a north-westerly, enough to make roads greasy

Monday-evening drizzle after a dry week: roads will be slick

  • Light rain on dry tar is slipperier than a downpour; brake earlier
  • Wipers on intermittent, lights on
  • Go easy on painted lines and manhole covers

Law & licensing

In forceEffective: 30 July 2026

Cape Town can now impound your car on the spot

The City’s amended traffic by-law lets officers impound vehicles for street racing, drunk driving, driving without a valid licence, reckless driving and false or missing number plates. A car without plates is released only once plates are fitted.

10-year licence: draft rules out for comment

Draft regulations published on Monday would make licence cards for cars and motorbikes valid for ten years; comment closes in mid-September. Until the final rules are gazetted, the five-year renewal stands.

Fuel & costs

The September outlook got worse this week: petrol about R1 a litre up and diesel over R3, on higher oil prices and tight diesel supply. Fill up before Wednesday 2 September.
