The week in one line

Rain overnight into Tuesday’s first school run, a cool, blustery Tuesday with big surf, a 7 °C start on Wednesday, then dry, calm days warming to 24 °C by Sunday.

Schools are back, fuel is up by more than R3 a litre from Wednesday, and the week turns fine after Tuesday. Wipers and tread on Monday night, tyre pressures on Wednesday’s cold morning.

Law & licensing

ProposedEffective: Not yet announced

10-year licence cards move a step closer

The Department of Transport has put the proposed rules to Parliament’s standing committee: cards for cars and motorbikes valid ten years, heavy-vehicle codes staying at five, with a pricing model still being worked out. Nothing changes yet; renew before your card expires.

ProposedEffective: Not before March 2027

AARTO: still not in the Western Cape

No proclamation has extended AARTO beyond the 62 municipalities it reached in July, and the latest indication from the agency is March 2027 for the rest. Fines in Cape Town still go the usual court route, and no demerit points are being recorded anywhere.

Fuel & costs

Wednesday’s record increase is in: petrol 95 up R3.33 to R29.38 a litre at the coast, 93 up R3.12, and diesel 50ppm up about R3.24 to R31.93 wholesale. The first days of data for November already show a large shortfall, driven by product prices, but it’s far too early to put a number on it.

From Wed 7 OctPer litre
Petrol 95+R3.33+333c
Petrol 93+R3.12+312c
Diesel 50ppm+R3.24+324c

Official adjustment of 7 October. Diesel is the wholesale change; pump prices vary. November comment from Central Energy Fund data to 6 October.

How often do I need a wheel alignment?

Every 10,000 km or once a year — and straight away after a big pothole or kerb knock, or if your steering wheel sits crooked.
