01

The week in one line

30 °C on Monday and Tuesday, fog on Wednesday morning, a blustery Friday, showers on Saturday, and a cut-off low arriving on Sunday evening.

Heat first, then the weather turns: the Gun Run closes roads in Green Point on Saturday and Sunday, and a cut-off low brings thunderstorms from Sunday evening into Monday.

Thirty degrees on Monday and Tuesday: check pressures cold

  • Check tyre pressures cold, in the morning, not after a drive
  • Keep an eye on the temperature gauge in slow traffic
  • Never leave children or pets in a parked car

These are quick checks at home or on the forecourt, not an inspection; a workshop check and your service schedule still apply.

Can’t tick one off? Pop in on Saturday (08:00 - 13:00) and we’ll check it while you wait.

Law & licensing

ProposedEffective: Not yet announced

Last days to comment on 10-year licence cards

The draft regulations that extend car and motorbike licence cards to ten years close for comment in mid-September. If they go through unchanged, a card ordered before your current one expires runs ten years from the day after it expires.

ProposedEffective: No start date

No, your car does not need an annual roadworthy

Posts claiming periodic roadworthy tests for private cars start this year are wrong. The 2014 amendment that would test cars over ten years old every two years has never been given a start date. A roadworthy is still only needed when a car changes hands.

Fuel & costs

Brent crude over $100 has October heading for another big jump: around R2.30 on petrol and R2.20 on diesel so far, on top of September’s R1.34. Every litre counts now, and correctly inflated tyres are the cheapest saving there is.

Learn one thing

How often should I replace my tyres?

When the tread is down to about 3 mm, when there’s damage, or when they’re 10 years old — whichever comes first. The legal limit is 1 mm, but wet grip drops off long before that.
